Keep Guam Beautiful, Ritidian Monthly Beach Cleanup

Keep Guam Beautiful, Ritidian Monthly Beach Cleanup

Keep Guam Beautiful is a community-oriented cleanup campaign conducted by the National Park Service, in partnership with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service conducts cleanups at Ritidian Refuge on the first Saturday of every month and the National Park Service conducts cleanups the second Saturday of every month at varying locations. See our Events page at www.fws.gov/refuge/Guam/Events.html for more details regarding the Ritidian Refuge cleanups.

The Guam National Wildlife Refuge, Ritidian Unit is an important nesting habitat for the endangered green sea turtle. Support vital conservation efforts and come join the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to Keep Guam Beautiful!

For more information about this event or the Refuge in general, contact (671) 355-5096, or go to our website at www.fws.gov/refuge/Guam.html.

Volunteers who contribute a minimum of 10 hours of service will be eligible to receive a prize as a token of our appreciation. We hope to see you sporting refuge swag in the future and spreading the word about these crucial cleanups and why they are important.

Preparation Instruction:
All volunteers are welcome to join, but must have a volunteer application (OF 301) and agreement (OF 301A) on file. These documents can be found on the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Volunteers page at www.fws.gov/volunteers/resources.html, and can be returned either electronically in advance, or as a hard copy on the day of the event. There will also be forms available on the day of, for individuals who would like to join last minute - so feel free to invite your friends, family, and colleagues! However, we ask that you arrive 15 minutes early or complete the forms prior to your arrival if possible, to reduce delay as we are unable to begin the cleanup until all paperwork is completed.

Some gloves, trash collection buckets/bags and trash pickers will be provided, but we recommend participants bring the following: their own gloves if preferred, a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat for sun protection, comfortable shoes, and snacks.

Activity Instruction:
Volunteers will meet at the Nature Center building at 9 A.M. on the morning of the event. Directions can be found at our Plan Your Visit page at www.fws.gov/volunteers/resources.html. Participants will receive a safety and informative briefing on the purpose and importance of beach cleanups prior to departing for the beach. Volunteers will be required to submit their volunteer forms and sign-in prior to the briefing, and sign-out immediately following the conclusion of the cleanup.

Volunteers will earn one hour for each hour of beach cleanup completed.

Reflection Instruction:
Participants will also earn an additional hour of service learning credit by writing a written reflection about the positive and negative effects of human activities on the environment. Volunteers must submit their reflections to their teacher - and preferably to the refuge POC for this event - to demonstrate knowledge gained.

Learning Standards/Objectives:

Life Science Standard: Recognize and describe the role humans play in the Earth's ecosystems, and how human activity can affect ecosystems both positively and negatively.

Students will demonstrate social responsibility by assisting conservation efforts through habitat restoration projects at the Guam National Wildlife Refuge.
