Guam Herbarium Digitization

Guam Herbarium Digitization

The GUAM Herbarium is building a collection database for more than 60,000 plant specimens. This database will virtually exhibit Micronesian biodiversity and endemism to local and global researchers, and invite scientific communication and conservation resources to our islands. Please join us in this digitization expedition. You will contribute to our community as a citizen scientist and grow your service leaning experience, only using your fragmented time. We need your assistance.

Preparation Instruction:
We recommend you search the words Herbarium and Digitization before you begin. If you feel ready for the challenge, notify your teachers to see which teacher will connect this project for your service learning hours. Contact us if you or your parents have questions or concerns.

    6. Notify us 2 weeks before your certificate is needed. Be sure to provide us your record of transcriptions and hours completed.

Reflection Instruction:
1. Are you familiar with any of the plants you encountered? Do you remember its scientific name? 2. Can you think of a more efficient way to extract and record information from a picture file? 3. How can you improve the accuracy of data-recording in this project? How does this project benefit the community?
How does it feel to be a part of something so important? Would you recommend this project to your friends?

Learning Standards/Objectives:
Standard 2. Life Science: Students understand the diversity and unity of living organisms, the living environment, and principles of ecology.

BI.2.12  Explain the organization of life on Earth using the modern classification system.

BI. 2.30  Recognize and describe how human beings are part of Earth’s ecosystems and that human activities can, deliberately or inadvertently, alter the equilibrium in ecosystems.

BI 2.33  Recognize and describe how a great diversity of species increases the chance that the system will survive, even with the loss of some species resulting from large changes.

Standard 5. Science and Technology: Students develop understandings about connections between natural and designed worlds and are provided with opportunities to develop decision making abilities related to the use of technology.

BI.5.2   Gather information to make informed judgments about technological development and change in areas related to life science and communicate opinions in an appropriate manner.

BI.5.3  Compare the risks and benefits of potential solutions to technological issues in the life sciences with specific potential solutions.

BI.5.4  Explain how scientific advancements and emerging technologies in biological sciences have influenced society
